The Best Friend
Jessie Tate-Rogers
Late 30s — same generation as Ryan
Warm, slightly rumpled, mother-of-multiple energy
Physically present in every scene she's in — holds Ryan big and bright
Radiates the specific competence of someone who does everything for everyone and would be embarrassed if you pointed it out
Jessie is the best friend who showed up without being asked and never asked for credit. She is the foundation Ryan stands on when she forgets she has one. Her voice alternates between tender and cackling — Southern, Phil-and-kids domestic, the sound of someone who has been laughing at your disasters for twenty years and has every right to. She is the only character in the novel who matches Ryan's energy rather than balancing it.
Jessie is Ryan's best friend and tether in Anatomy of Release — the one who books the flight without telling you, shows up at the door, and would absolutely roast you and absolutely also catch you.

"Just let me love you, dammit!"
Jessie communicates in playlists. She always has. If you get one, you're being loved — whether you're ready for it or not.
